Step On Fife volunteer at Community Cafe in Fife

Published on 19/10/2016

The Step on Fife volunteers are working with Reverend Ron Rye of Whytescauseway Baptist Church in Kirkcaldy to run a Community Cafe!

The church runs a cafe for people in the community who are on a low income.  For only £1 the church offers soup and a sandwich or toastie, and unlimited tea and coffee. If someone is identified as homeless they will received the food for free.

Due to the cafe's popularity, the church volunteers were struggling to meet demand. The Step On Fife participants heard about this and offered to volunteer at the cafe. They now run the kitchen and do all the cooking, starting at 9.30am to cook the soup and heat up toasties.

This is  a great way for the volunteers to contribute to the local community, and learn new skills.

Employability & Development Co-ordinator Nicky Paton said, "It was a great idea for the young people to volunteer at the cafe. They have gained so much from it and enjoy working with other volunteers and customers."
